Signs are all around if you pay attention. A sign or symbol only stands for something, but that does not necessarily make it that which it stands for. Thus the reading of this and that will not be plastered in black and white as it would be too obvious. Cloaked is what the sign or symbol believes it is. Would you go for that? A sign/symbol covers the core of what it is pasted to, painted to, or shaped to be by drawing your attention. What appears is not always what is. Be thee not fooled. Something other than the advertisement on the billboard or the word(s)/shape on/of the street sign exist, however, you have to see past what initially draws your attention. It only takes a second to make the realization, but that second is worth it.
When reading signs, it is also handy to have a thermometer as well so that you may UNDERSTAND the hot or cold aspects of its properties. A patient individual who knows that the sign is but a cloak and the temperature reading without the proper instrument will be wrong, should take the time to disassemble the parts to find out what are its properties and what holds it together and why.
Behavior dictates that most humans do not like to read lengthy pieces nor do they like to read the fine print. It is rather like the bible toting. People rather just be told what it is about than to read and examine the works for themselves. Ahem–I have my electron microscope out. ~ Arachne ~ February 2, 2009 @ 12:16 a.m.
NOTE: Writers can and do sometimes use words or metaphors to cover or state what they really mean. Do I really mean a sign or symbol or is that too a sign or symbol for something other than what I state? Signs/symbols could also be reflections in pos or neg form. Now play with it.

If I hadn't decided to create a blog today, then what? And so you're the first being, the first link that my eyes saw. I, of course, had to click it; not that I do things out of impulse or anything. I just, lets say, have another eye opened that most people don't have or never opened. And this comment isn't about me and my story but rather what you have said and what I have to respond --my reaction.
I believe in metaphors, real-life ones. They come and go. So, I was wondering if this is what you meant by symbols and signs. I understand that perhaps the reason you even posted this was to hear a sign that was in your thoughts, your consciousness and to let it stream out.
Unfortunately, I am not a sign. All I am is some lonely college student stuck in upstate New York for finals week and waiting patiently to go back home, to the city, to visit my lovely lady and all my friends.
And perhaps I should read more of your stuff and lurk (not creepily) in the shadows of your site, though, unfortunately that comes natural for me.
This is purely for insight, which I may believe you have and that I may be able to give, though it's too early on to say.
Hello Alastair~
When I wrote this piece, I had recently finished “Man and His Symbols” by Carl Jung. We have our classic symbols such as a stop sign that even if the words were in another language, we would understand the color and shape to mean “stop.” A symbol, such as an apple, can mean many things to many people although it is merely a fruit. When used in conjunction with “x,” it could mean a whole different story based on mainstream association, i.e., Eve in the garden. Then again, if there were a personal negative association attached that creates anxiety such as with John Watson’s “Little Albert” experiment, the symbol would come to represent fear. If thinking about Ludwig Wittgenstein, we must look at the makeup of the symbol itself and it that there is more that what the eye beholds. What are the raw materials that come to make an end product? Are we conscious of these things? Are we conscious of how advertising lures us to buy products? Actually, do you pay attention to ads? If you do, how do they make you feel? They are mere propaganda tools that we should dissect, inspect, ingest, and purge. The signs of the times are repeating in history’s fashion, yet who is looking? If you had to judge this sign, what you would make of it?
The sign read: Recession 101 It's is a test, not a final.
