On Friday, April 13th at approximately 4:45 p.m. I was at U.S. Customs. As is customary, I gave my band card and was readying my car registration for view and verification by the officer.
The first question he asked was the purpose of my trip so I told him that I was going to visit my daughter in Brooklyn.
He then asked what my citizenship was. Being the sly fox that I am, I stated that I was born in Brooklyn thereby letting him assume, but I did not claim citizenship. He questioned if I was claiming American citizenship and I said: Nah. He then asked if I was claiming native citizenship and I said: Yup. He then asked for a run down on my clan and family tree which I was more than happy to provide. After all the jabber, I told him that I had beer and blah blah blah in the car to which he replied: "I DON'T GIVE A SHIT!" He did not even bother to check into the car. Hell, could have had automatic weapons or nuclear bombs, but he didn't give a shit.
His line of questioning, leds me to believe that perhaps a leg to stand on could be had if more people claim independence from citizenship to either country (U.S. / Canada). As our homeland and people exist on both sides of THEIR border, the issue of citizenship to any country should be MOOT. Our problems are not theirs and we should not be forced to claim one or the other in order to see our loved ones.
Can government divide families as was done in the civil war? Can we be made to pick sides? The answer is NO. We must choose to stand tall, strong, and united as a people. We are of this continent and claim no ownership of land as ownership of land is not our way. Ownership of land is a white concept and not a native one.
Don't be fooled by your council chief(s) into believing that you must get a passport and claim citizenship as that is a ploy to gain more U.S./Canadian citizens and to decrease the sovereign people of the Haudenosaunee. Once again this is a land grab issue as once there are no more native people occupying the territory, the territory reverts back to the crown.
Your council does not act in your best interest and they never have. It is time to stand up for your rights. Speak up and out for what you believe and then act upon it. Know that united we stand strong and divided we fall. They are looking for division so we need to surprise them. ~ Maggie ~ Penned prior to 3:00 p.m. on April 17, 2007
